Saint Gervais Les Bains, a traditional spa town, sits majestically at the foot of Mont Blanc in the French Alps. Its Belle Époque architecture and thermal baths reflect a rich history, attracting visitors for well over a century. The village maintains a vibrant local atmosphere, extending beyond the winter season, offering a unique blend of alpine sport and relaxation.

The Evasion Mont-Blanc ski area provides an extensive 445km of pistes, linking Saint Gervais with neighbouring Megève, Saint-Nicolas de Véroce, and Les Contamines. The local terrain ranges from 850m in the village up to 2,353m at the summit, providing a vertical drop exceeding 1,500m. Tree-lined runs on the lower slopes transition into expansive bowls higher up, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of Mont Blanc. The predominantly north-facing slopes ensure good snow retention, often lasting from mid-December through to mid-April.

Skiing and snowboarding in Saint Gervais offers a diverse experience without feeling overwhelming, prioritising quality over sheer mileage. The mountain naturally divides into distinct sectors: Le Bettex and Mont d'Arbois feature gentler, more sheltered slopes, while the higher areas towards Mont Joly and the connection to Megève provide steeper, more challenging pistes. Consistent snow cover is generally assured due to the resort's altitude and aspect. When conditions are favourable, the off-piste potential is significant for a resort of this calibre.

The lift system in Saint Gervais has benefited from continuous upgrades, featuring modern gondolas for primary access and high-speed chairs on the upper slopes. Despite these modern facilities, the resort maintains an unhurried pace, with fewer crowds than nearby Megève. Mountain restaurants invite leisurely lunches, often with stunning views of Mont Blanc.

Saint Gervais offers an excellent environment for beginners. The nursery slopes at Le Bettex, accessible by gondola from the village, place learners directly into alpine scenery on gentle, wide runs. Progression to easy green and blue pistes feels natural and gradual. The tree-lined lower slopes provide shelter and improve visibility on overcast days, aiding nervous beginners. Long blue runs down to Saint-Nicolas de Véroce allow new skiers to experience proper descents without excessive technical demands.

Intermediate skiers are well catered for across the entire Evasion Mont-Blanc area. The network of blue and red runs connecting Saint Gervais to Megève via Mont d'Arbois offers long, sweeping descents through forests and open snowfields. Red runs from Mont Joly towards Les Contamines provide sustained gradients and excellent snow quality. The quieter areas towards Saint-Nicolas de Véroce are ideal alternatives when other sectors are busier. The terrain's variety allows intermediates to refine their skills, with occasional steeper sections providing a gentle push without becoming too demanding. Confident intermediates may also explore the easier black runs, particularly on the Mont Joly side.

Advanced skiers will find the black runs in Saint Gervais genuinely challenging. The descent from Mont Joly offers a sustained pitch where moguls quickly form, while the north-facing black runs above Le Bettex hold snow well but can become icy in the mornings. Itinerary routes offer further possibilities when conditions permit, especially the descent towards Les Contamines, which provides a backcountry feel within the lift-served area. Off-piste opportunities are surprisingly extensive, particularly between Saint Gervais and Les Contamines, where couloirs and powder stashes often remain untracked. Hiring a guide is recommended to discover the best lines and to access the renowned Vallée Blanche descent from the Aiguille du Midi. Chamonix is also a mere twenty minutes away for day trips.
