What to expect at Willingen

Willingen is a small resort in central Germany's Sauerland region, best known internationally for the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup hill (the Mühlenkopfschanze is one of the biggest in the world) rather than for downhill skiing. The alpine area itself is a compact 18 km on the Ettelsberg at 838 m, which puts it firmly in the day-trip category for skiers in the Ruhr conurbation. It has a modern eight-person gondola, night skiing on the main run, and enough beginner and intermediate terrain to run family weekends. Cross-country skiing on the Rothaarsteig ridge system is arguably the bigger draw locally.
