What to expect at Super Besse

Founded in 1961, Super Besse is a purpose-built resort set in Puy de Sancy, the highest peak in France's Massif Central. It sits within Auvergne Volcanoes Natural Park, a UNESCO world heritage site, surrounded by volcanic peaks, frozen lakes, and wide-open landscapes. The resort wraps around the Lac des Hermines at 1,350m, with a largely pedestrianised centre that's easy to navigate on foot. The frozen lake itself becomes part of the scenery in midwinter, and its setting beneath the volcanic ridgelines gives Super Besse a distinctive atmosphere.

Super Besse's ski area stretches from 1,350m to 1,850m across 40km of pistes and 32 runs. Terrain has a rounded, volcanic character: wide, open slopes above the treeline where you can see for miles, with more sheltered runs dropping through pine forest below. Greens and blues dominate the lower sections, making this strong territory for beginners and intermediates, while reds and blacks on the upper mountain offer steep, more exposed skiing with bite. When conditions allow, a lift link to the Grand Sancy domain extends the skiing to around 85km in total. Snow cannons cover 70% of the area, night skiing runs several evenings a week, and the season typically runs from mid-December to late March.

Super Besse has enough to keep time off the slopes interesting. An indoor swimming pool, ice rink, bowling alley, and the Fantasticable (a 1,600m zip line that soars over the resort at up to 120km/h) provide variety and entertainment between ski days. Dining leans towards honest regional cooking: truffade, Saint-Nectaire cheese, and hearty Auvergnat fare in cosy slope-side spots. The medieval village of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, a short drive down the mountain, adds cobbled streets and Renaissance architecture for an afternoon that feels a world away from the pistes.
