What to expect at Mürren

Mürren is a car-free village on a 1,650 m shelf directly opposite the north face of the Eiger, reachable only by cable car or cog railway. Population is around 400 and stays that way, the village hasn't grown in a century. Skiing is on the Schilthorn at 2,970 m, with the rotating Piz Gloria restaurant made famous by On Her Majesty's Secret Service perched on top. The Inferno race, first run in 1928, is still the world's largest amateur ski race with 1,800 skiers descending 14 km from the summit to the valley floor. Terrain is genuinely demanding, steep, exposed and mostly ungroomed, which is why it stays under-the-radar.
