Nendaz
The birthplace of the Freeride World Tour, this large, modern Swiss resort has 250 miles of slopes to carve.
What to expect at Nendaz
This large, modern resort is nestled within the largest ski area in Switzerland, the 4 Valleys, and is a fantastic base to explore the 400 km/248 mi of slopes that stretch from Verbier to Thyon. The resort shares its runs with Verbier but is comparably more affordable to visit, and provides easy access from nearby airports in Geneva and Sion. The surrounding high mountain peaks, expansive gondolas, and luxurious chalets make for breathtaking scenery as you traverse the diverse terrain into the Rhône Valley. There's also plenty of freeriding available, as this is the birthplace of the Freeride World Tour. The resort is packed full of bars, restaurants and shops, and non-ski activities here include winter walking and snowshoeing trails, ice skating, rock climbing and more!

Skiing and staying in Nendaz
Nendaz, Valais
Nendaz is nestled on a sun-drenched plateau within the Swiss canton of Valais, offering panoramic views of the Bernese Alps. The main village, Haute-Nendaz, sits at 1,400m and maintains a charming, authentic atmosphere with traditional chalets. It feels more like a genuine mountain community than a purpose-built resort, providing a warm and family-friendly environment.
This resort serves as a vital entry point to the expansive 4 Vallées ski area, one of Switzerland's largest. It provides access to over 400km of interconnected pistes that stretch from Verbier to Thyon. The local slopes extend up to the Mont-Fort glacier at 3,330m, offering a remarkable vertical drop of 1,930m and serviced by 20 lifts. The ski season typically runs from mid-November to late April, with the glacier guaranteeing excellent snow conditions throughout.
Skiing and Snowboarding
Nendaz offers a diverse range of terrain, from gentle nursery slopes within the village to challenging high-altitude runs descending from Mont-Fort at 3,330m. While the local, south-west facing slopes benefit from abundant sunshine, the higher glacier terrain consistently holds its snow. The seamless connection to the vast 4 Vallées network ensures an almost limitless variety of runs.
Compared to some neighbouring resorts, Nendaz maintains a relaxed pace, with lift queues generally being short even during peak periods. The terrain transitions smoothly between sectors, allowing skiers to branch out from Plan du Fou and Siviez towards Verbier, Veysonnaz, or Thyon, each area having its own distinct character.
Beginner and Intermediate Skiing
Nendaz is an ideal destination for beginners. A dedicated nursery area in the village centre, complete with gentle gradients and a magic carpet, provides a stress-free introduction to skiing. Progression is straightforward onto the wide, well-groomed, and uncrowded blue runs of the Tracouet sector, which are served by modern lifts. The village-level slopes also allow for easy returns to accommodation.
Intermediates will discover an abundance of fantastic terrain. The local slopes around Plan du Fou feature long, enjoyable red runs with consistent pitches and stunning views. The link through Siviez opens up the entire 4 Vallées network, allowing confident intermediates to explore cruising reds in Verbier’s Savoleyres sector. The runs from Gentianes down through Plan du Fou are particularly rewarding, offering sustained descents that challenge technique without being overly intimidating.
Advanced and Expert Terrain
The Mont-Fort glacier provides Nendaz's most formidable challenges. The descent from the 3,330m summit is a demanding, sustained run with varied snow conditions and significant exposure, ranking among Switzerland's most exhilarating marked descents. Below the glacier, the steep black runs around Gentianes and Tortin will test proficient skiers with their mogul fields and narrow passages. Extensive off-piste opportunities are available, notably in the Tortin valley and around the Mont-Fort massif, with the Backside of Mont-Fort being a renowned freeride itinerary. For any off-piste exploration, avalanche equipment is essential, and local guides can facilitate access to even more remote terrain.

Its relaxed atmosphere and manageable size simplify family outings.
- How does Nendaz connect to Verbier?
- Nendaz connects to the broader 4 Vallées ski area via the Siviez lift hub. From here, one can ski towards Verbier's Savoleyres sector. Reaching Verbier's main slopes requires additional lift connections. This link is well-suited for day trips, and the 4 Vallées pass covers the entire network.

- Nendaz generally offers better value than some of Switzerland's more high-profile resorts, while still providing access to the same quality of skiing through its 4 Vallées connection. Accommodation, dining, and lift passes are typically priced below resorts like Verbier and Zermatt, making it a smart choice for those seeking Swiss quality without the premium cost.
- What's the snow like in Nendaz?
- While the local south-west facing slopes can soften in the afternoon sun, the high-altitude terrain around Mont-Fort and the glacier, reaching up to 3,330m, maintains reliable snow cover throughout the season. The ski season typically runs from mid-November to late April, with snowmaking facilities supplementing the lower slopes.
- What's the après-ski like in Nendaz?
- Nendaz offers a friendly and relaxed après-ski scene, centred around sun terraces, local wines, and village bars. It’s more sociable than party-focused. For those seeking a livelier night out, Verbier is accessible via the ski area during the day, or by car or taxi in the evening.
