Samnaun

Samnaun is the tranquil, family-oriented, duty-free Swiss gateway to the Silvretta Arena, one of the largest interconnected ski regions in the Eastern Alps. It shares 239km of pistes with Ischgl in Austria. While Ischgl is known for its vibrant après-ski and significant events, Samnaun offers a contrasting experience: a peaceful Engadin mountain village in Graubünden, Switzerland. Here, you can enjoy extensive skiing across two countries by day and explore Europe's highest shopping street, offering duty-free goods, in the evenings. As Switzerland's sole duty-free zone, it features approximately 60 shops selling luxury brands, spirits, cosmetics, and Swiss products at tax-exempt prices. This blend of world-class skiing and tax-free retail is unique in the Alps.

The Silvretta Arena spans altitudes from 1,400m to 2,872m at the Greitspitze summit. It boasts 239km of groomed pistes, 15km of ski routes, and 46 advanced lifts, including the world's first double-decker cable car, capable of transporting about 97,000 skiers per hour. The terrain caters to all abilities, with 38km of blue runs, 155km of red, and 46km of black. A key feature is the cross-border element: the renowned Smugglers' Trail covers 35km across three difficulty levels (Gold, Silver, Bronze), tracing historic smuggling routes. Additionally, the 8km Duty-Free Run descends from the Palinkopf (2,864m) directly to Samnaun's shops. Extensive snowmaking, with over 1,100 cannons, and high-altitude slopes (most above 2,000m) ensure a reliable snow cover from late November to early May.

From Samnaun, you have full access to the 239km of the Silvretta Arena. The Samnaun side features broad, sunny, south-facing slopes, perfect for carving and cruising, with the Alp Trida area serving as the primary hub. From here, lifts extend towards the Austrian border and the Greitspitze summit (2,872m), connecting to Ischgl's extensive network. The cross-border experience is seamless, with continuous terrain between Switzerland and Austria and no passport checks on the mountain.

The Smugglers' Trail is a highlight, a 35km cross-border route available in three variants (Gold, Silver, and Bronze), following paths historically used for smuggling goods between the two nations. The 8km Duty-Free Run from Palinkopf (2,864m) to Samnaun is a wide, scenic descent with options to avoid steeper sections. The arena's longest run is the 11km descent from Greitspitze (2,872m) to Ischgl village. The lift infrastructure is among the most modern in the Alps, featuring heated chairlifts, high-speed gondolas, and a double-decker cable car for efficient and comfortable travel.

Samnaun is an excellent base for beginners within the Silvretta Arena. The Kinderland WinterBlumenTraum in the village offers three magic carpets, an obstacle course, and a heated indoor play area, "Magic World," for young learners. The Musellahang in the Samnaun valley provides a gentle practice area at village level. Once comfortable, beginners can progress to the wide blue runs around Alp Trida, including the 400m beginner piste by the Kinderland, enjoying spacious and uncrowded conditions.

Intermediate skiers will find an expansive playground with 155km of red runs throughout the Silvretta Arena, offering diverse skiing from Samnaun's sunny cruisers to Ischgl's more challenging terrain. The 8km Duty-Free Run from Palinkopf is a classic intermediate descent. The Smugglers' Trail Silver route offers a full-day, cross-border adventure on intermediate slopes. Runs around the Gampenbahn chairlift (38 and 39) on the Austrian side and the scenic Velilltal route (7) are popular intermediate choices. The south-facing Samnaun slopes are ideal for morning and early afternoon skiing, offering soft, sunny corduroy. In the afternoon, the north-facing Ischgl terrain provides firmer, faster conditions. This daily shift optimises snow quality and variety. Mountain restaurants on both sides offer excellent cuisine, with Swiss specialities in Samnaun and Tyrolean dishes in Ischgl.

Advanced skiers have access to 46km of black runs across the Silvretta Arena, predominantly found around Palinkopf and Greitspitze on the Austrian side. Black run 14a features a challenging 70% gradient, making it the steepest in the area. "Route Eleven," an 11km descent from Greitspitze (2,872m) to Ischgl valley, combines black and red sections for a sustained, demanding experience. Off-piste terrain is accessible from Greitspitze, with south-facing powder slopes on the Samnaun side often less frequented than those in Ischgl, making fresh tracks easier to find. Although the south-facing Samnaun off-piste can be affected by the sun more quickly, on days with fresh snow, the smaller crowds in Samnaun mean untracked lines are often available long after Ischgl's terrain has been skied out. Guided freeride tours are offered through the ski school. For the most demanding terrain, the Palinkopf and Greitspitze areas on the Austrian side provide steep, sustained descents with north-facing aspects.
