Megève, an elegant French Alpine resort, offers a distinctive skiing experience rooted in a medieval village. Active since the 1920s, it retains its original allure, providing stunning views of Mont Blanc. This destination offers an authentic Alpine village ambience, complete with cobbled streets, a medieval church, horse-drawn carriages and charming chalets.

As part of the extensive Evasion Mont-Blanc ski area, Megève provides access to over 400 km of interconnected pistes. The resort's elevation ranges from 1,113m in the village to 2,350m at the highest lifts. Its gentle, tree-lined terrain is particularly well-suited for intermediate skiers and families, prioritising enjoyable cruising over extreme challenges.

Skiing and snowboarding in Megève is a relaxed yet rewarding experience, featuring pistes designed for cruising and developing confidence rather than extreme technical difficulty. The interconnected terrain is divided into three main sectors: Rochebrune, Mont d'Arbois and Le Jaillet, each offering its own character.

Expect long, flowing runs winding through pine forests and open bowls with expansive views of Mont Blanc, providing sufficient variety for a week of exploration. The moderate altitude means snow conditions can vary, though the extensive tree cover adds charm and helps to retain snow.

Megève is an excellent choice for beginners, featuring forgiving slopes and dedicated nursery areas set apart from busier runs. Tree-lined paths offer definition and shelter, aiding newcomers in mastering their first turns. Once confident, a progression of longer green runs and wide blue pistes awaits. Local ski schools, including the established ESF, offer English-speaking instructors.

The resort is particularly well-suited for intermediates, with a predominance of well-groomed blue and red runs. The extensive terrain provides ample opportunity for exploration throughout the week. Mont d'Arbois offers superb red runs with consistent gradients, ideal for honing technique. Rochebrune presents slightly more challenging terrain and typically fewer crowds; its forested pistes offer an atmospheric alternative when visibility is poor on higher, exposed areas.

While Megève is not primarily known as an expert destination, offering more cruising pistes than steep challenges, it does feature black runs, particularly on the north-facing slopes of Mont Joly, which tend to hold snow well. Experienced skiers often visit Megève for its village charm and are content with the generally mellower terrain.

For more demanding options, Les Contamines is accessible via Saint-Gervais. The Épaule sector provides some unpisted terrain, offering an added dimension. For those seeking true backcountry experiences, local guides can lead excursions into less-tracked areas above Saint-Nicolas de Véroc. Additionally, the FIS downhill course on the Côte 2000 presents a formidable challenge for testing one's skills.
