What to expect at Winterberg
Winterberg is the largest ski complex in central and northern Germany, the 'Skiliftkarussell' links nine separate lift areas around the town, adding up to 27 km of piste on a high plateau at 820 m in the Sauerland. Snow is only reliable because of aggressive snowmaking, but the town has made peace with that and gets a full season out of it. It is famous for the German bobsleigh, luge and skeleton World Cup track and for hosting World Championships in those disciplines. Family day trips from Cologne, Frankfurt and the Ruhr are the mainstay, and the town has one of Germany's better beer scenes to close the day.
