What to expect at Formigal Panticosa
Formigal-Panticosa is a linked area on the Spanish side of the Aragonese Pyrenees, close to the French border above the Ossau valley. Four valleys form a horseshoe with lifts along the ridges, giving 176 km of piste that skews intermediate. It is one of the sunnier resorts in the range, which is nice for the panorama but tough on snow lower down when the wind swings south. The base village is a modern development at 1,500 m with the usual apartment blocks, but Panticosa a few km down the road has a proper 19th-century spa town at its centre, complete with thermal baths in a Belle Époque hotel.
