Nendaz

Nendaz is nestled on a sun-drenched plateau within the Swiss canton of Valais, offering panoramic views of the Bernese Alps. The main village, Haute-Nendaz, sits at 1,400m and maintains a charming, authentic atmosphere with traditional chalets. It feels more like a genuine mountain community than a purpose-built resort, providing a warm and family-friendly environment.

This resort serves as a vital entry point to the expansive 4 Vallées ski area, one of Switzerland's largest. It provides access to over 400km of interconnected pistes that stretch from Verbier to Thyon. The local slopes extend up to the Mont-Fort glacier at 3,330m, offering a remarkable vertical drop of 1,930m and serviced by 20 lifts. The ski season typically runs from mid-November to late April, with the glacier guaranteeing excellent snow conditions throughout.

Nendaz offers a diverse range of terrain, from gentle nursery slopes within the village to challenging high-altitude runs descending from Mont-Fort at 3,330m. While the local, south-west facing slopes benefit from abundant sunshine, the higher glacier terrain consistently holds its snow. The seamless connection to the vast 4 Vallées network ensures an almost limitless variety of runs.

Compared to some neighbouring resorts, Nendaz maintains a relaxed pace, with lift queues generally being short even during peak periods. The terrain transitions smoothly between sectors, allowing skiers to branch out from Plan du Fou and Siviez towards Verbier, Veysonnaz, or Thyon, each area having its own distinct character.

Nendaz is an ideal destination for beginners. A dedicated nursery area in the village centre, complete with gentle gradients and a magic carpet, provides a stress-free introduction to skiing. Progression is straightforward onto the wide, well-groomed, and uncrowded blue runs of the Tracouet sector, which are served by modern lifts. The village-level slopes also allow for easy returns to accommodation.

Intermediates will discover an abundance of fantastic terrain. The local slopes around Plan du Fou feature long, enjoyable red runs with consistent pitches and stunning views. The link through Siviez opens up the entire 4 Vallées network, allowing confident intermediates to explore cruising reds in Verbier’s Savoleyres sector. The runs from Gentianes down through Plan du Fou are particularly rewarding, offering sustained descents that challenge technique without being overly intimidating.

The Mont-Fort glacier provides Nendaz's most formidable challenges. The descent from the 3,330m summit is a demanding, sustained run with varied snow conditions and significant exposure, ranking among Switzerland's most exhilarating marked descents. Below the glacier, the steep black runs around Gentianes and Tortin will test proficient skiers with their mogul fields and narrow passages. Extensive off-piste opportunities are available, notably in the Tortin valley and around the Mont-Fort massif, with the Backside of Mont-Fort being a renowned freeride itinerary. For any off-piste exploration, avalanche equipment is essential, and local guides can facilitate access to even more remote terrain.
