Ruka is Finland's most reliable long-season fell resort, near the town of Kuusamo in Northern Ostrobothnia. Skiing tops out at just 492 m on the Rukatunturi fell, but the season runs from October to May thanks to consistently cold Arctic winters. Ruka hosts the FIS Nordic Combined and Ski Jumping World Cup opening rounds every November, so it is a fixture on the international calendar. The freestyle park is unusually good for the size of the resort. Base village is walkable and modern rather than charming, but the wider Kuusamo area has proper wilderness, bear-watching in winter is a thing, though most bears are asleep.

Skiing & Snowboarding
The skiing and snowboarding at Ruka are particularly well-suited for beginners and intermediates. Wide, well-groomed pistes wind through silent Lapland forests, offering a serene backdrop for improving skills. The air is crisp and clean, and the low-hanging polar sun creates a unique atmosphere.
While beginners will find plenty of gentle terrain, intermediates can confidently explore the 19 blue and 14 red runs. More experienced skiers will also find steeper pitches to maintain interest, including World Cup-standard facilities that ensure high-quality conditions.
Learning to Ski in Ruka
Ruka is an excellent destination for those new to skiing or snowboarding. The uncrowded slopes and gentle gradients create a calm and supportive learning environment. A dedicated beginner area near the village features mellow runs and magic carpets, facilitating easy progression.
Exceptional snow quality, maintained by modern snowmaking, means learners won't contend with icy or slushy patches. English-speaking instructors are readily available, and the resort's relaxed atmosphere removes pressure, allowing beginners to learn at their own pace. Once comfortable, numerous easy blue runs provide opportunities to explore the forested trails.
Intermediate to Advanced Skiing
Intermediates will thrive on Ruka's extensive network of blue and red runs, ideal for building confidence and clocking up mileage. Long, flowing descents through birch and pine forests offer consistent snow conditions and ample variety for a week-long trip. The Saarua sector is particularly recommended for its diverse terrain, allowing skiers to find their rhythm.
For more advanced skiers, while the 201m vertical drop limits extreme challenges, the resort still offers plenty to enjoy. The 14 advanced runs and 8 expert-rated black runs provide technical interest, with tight, tree-lined corridors demanding precise control. The Mastinrinne and Etelärinne are the steepest on the mountain. Additionally, gladed areas between marked runs offer soft snow after fresh snowfall, and the Freestyle Center at Ruka is one of Finland's premier facilities for park progression.
