What to expect at Axamer Lizum
Axamer Lizum is Innsbruck's home ski mountain, a 20-minute drive from the city on the flanks of the Kalkkögel at 874 to 2,340 m. It hosted the alpine events of the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics and the Olympia and Damenabfahrt runs are still on the piste map. The area is compact, 40 km and nine lifts, but the terrain is unusually steep for its size and the Hoadl summit lift accesses genuine off-piste bowls. There is no real village, just a couple of hotels and the ski school building; most people arrive on the ski bus from Innsbruck, which is why lift queues are almost non-existent midweek.
