Ośrodki narciarskie w kraju: Sweden

Swedish skiing means Åre, the largest resort in northern Europe, and Sälen, the country's family heartland. The season runs deep into spring with long light evenings in April, terrain parks and night skiing are exceptional, and the culture is relaxed, well organised and very child friendly. Above the treeline the fells are exposed, so wind holds are part of the deal.

Narty, snowboard i zimowe atrakcje

Swedish skiing means Åre and Sälen, and the two serve different purposes. Åre, on the shore of a lake in Jämtland, is the largest resort in northern Europe, with skiing on the Åreskutan fell, a genuine town at its base and terrain that includes World Cup downhill pitches alongside long, forgiving intermediate runs. Sälen, closer to Stockholm and split across several linked areas including Lindvallen and Tandådalen, is the family heartland of Scandinavia and built around getting children onto snow with minimum friction.

Above the treeline the Swedish fells are exposed and wind holds are part of the deal, particularly at Åre where the summit lift closes often. Below it, the birch forest skiing is sheltered and the snow is cold and dry through midwinter. Riksgränsen, on the Norwegian border above the Arctic Circle, is the specialist option: it opens in February, runs into June, and offers skiing under the midnight sun in late May.

Season timing matters more here than in the Alps. December and January are dark and very cold, though extensive floodlighting keeps the days usable, while March and April give long light days and reliable snow, which is when Swedes themselves take their ski week, the traditional sportlov school holiday. Off the pistes, cross country trails run everywhere, dog sledding and snowmobiling are widely available, ice skating on frozen lakes is a genuine activity rather than a rink, and the terrain parks at Åre and Sälen are among the best in Europe.

Jedzenie i napoje

Swedish ski food is fika and hearty plates. Fika, the coffee and cake break, is not a marketing concept but a structural part of the day, and the mountain huts serve kanelbullar cinnamon buns and kladdkaka sticky chocolate cake to match. Renskav, sautéed reindeer with mushrooms and lingonberries, and elk in various forms are the game dishes worth ordering in Jämtland.

The classics hold up: Swedish meatballs with cream sauce, lingonberry and pickled cucumber, raggmunk potato pancakes with fried pork, and toast Skagen with prawns and dill for something lighter. Jämtland is a serious food region with a strong artisan cheese and charcuterie scene, and Åre's restaurant standard is higher than the resort's size suggests. Waffles with cloudberry jam and cream are the Scandinavian mountain constant.

Alcohol is sold through the state Systembolaget shops outside bars and restaurants, which shapes the drinking culture towards home entertaining. Beer and aquavit are the traditional pairings with heavy food, and glögg, the spiced mulled wine with raisins and almonds, runs through the early season. Åre has the liveliest après in Scandinavia, with slope side bars such as Verandan and Fjällgården starting mid afternoon, but it is a good deal less relentless than the Tirol.

Historia i tradycja

Åre hosted the Alpine World Ski Championships in 1954, 2007 and 2019, and stages World Cup racing regularly on the Olympiabacken, making it the most established alpine racing venue in Scandinavia. Sweden has bid several times for the Winter Olympics, most recently with Stockholm Åre for 2026, losing to Milan Cortina, and has never hosted the Winter Games despite its record in winter sport.

Swedish alpine racing punches far above the country's mountains. Ingemar Stenmark won 86 World Cup races in slalom and giant slalom, a record that stood for four decades, together with two Olympic golds at Lake Placid in 1980, and remains one of the most dominant technical skiers in the sport's history. Pernilla Wiberg, Anja Pärson and more recently Sara Hector and Sebastian Foss-Solevåg's Nordic rivals have sustained the tradition.

The Vasaloppet, run since 1922 over 90 km from Sälen to Mora, is the world's oldest and largest cross country ski race and commemorates Gustav Vasa's flight through Dalarna in 1520 before he became king. Around fifteen thousand skiers start the main race, and completing it is a lifetime ambition for a substantial slice of the Swedish population. The Sámi presence in the northern fells, with reindeer herding across Jämtland and Lapland, is the older layer of winter culture here as it is in Norway and Finland.
